Faced with the challenge of creating a catchy social media message with limited in-house resources, the Tampa Police Department turned to Twitter for back-up.  Hear how a virtual “casting call” and community engagement laid the foundation for the department’s award-winning “The Grinch Who Stole Packages” holiday safety message.

In this high energy segment, you will learn tips on how to leverage your online following to provide creative elements for your next social media campaign. You will also hear why community participation is an important part of broadening your online reach to help move the needle forward. Remember, it all starts with an “ask!”

Presenter Bio

Janelle McGregor is an award-winning communications professional and community builder who is always ready to roll up her sleeves and take on new challenges! Prior to her recent appointment as the Community Partnership Manager for the City of Tampa, you could often catch this former Tampa Police Department (TPD) spokesperson in front of the camera keeping the public informed or behind the scenes managing social media content and police-community relationships for the department.

Since starting her career with TPD in 2004, Janelle has consistently demonstrated a knack for establishing quality relationships between citizens and police through one-on-one communication and social media. In her role as an Assistant Public Information Officer, she blended her knowledge of the department’s policy and procedures with her community relations experience to bring added value to the position. In 2016, Janelle’s role expanded to overseeing a team of community outreach liaisons who coordinate the department’s involvement in more than 500 special events and neighborhood meetings throughout the year. Janelle’s leadership and experience helped to ensure TPD’s community engagement efforts are effective and consistent across the city.

Janelle’s portfolio features several national awards from the National Association of Government Communicators and the social media platform Nextdoor for her renowned ability to engage with community members online. Her accolades also include numerous local honors for her work in spearheading efforts to positively impact residents, particularly children in the city’s impoverished neighborhoods.
