National Association of Government Communicators’ President – Elect Chris O’Neil teamed up with several fellow government communicators to talk about the role of public affairs officers and the issues associated with government marketing for the fourth episode of the Federal News Radio program “Market Chat!” on February 21, 2017.
Nadine Villanueva Santiago of the Navy’s Office of Naval Research, Office of General Counsel; Erin Buechel Wieczorek of the Army’s Program Executive Officer for Enterprise Information Systems; and Cindy Your of the Defense Information Systems Agency, and O’Neil lent their expertise to the PAO portion of the program.
Government Marketing University invited the foursome to participate in their September 2016 GAIN Conference and the discussion generated so much interest, the show’s hosts, Lou Anne Brossman and Steve Watkins, invited the panelists to bring their expertise and perspective to the show.
“Many government marketers engage regularly with agency public affairs offices to get press releases approved, obtain speakers for events and webinars, and so much more,” said Brossman. “Yet many marketers are unclear what the rules are. Having Chris, Cindy, Erin and Nadine come on “Market Chat!” to explain how these decisions get made is one way that we at Government Marketing University are hoping to clear up some of the confusion that exists and hopefully help bring about better outcomes.”
The discussion covered issues including implied endorsements, speaking engagements, news releases about contracts, rules for the use of government imagery, rules for the use of government seals, emblems and logos, and tips for working with public affairs offices.
“Market Chat!” is an ongoing series that provides an open and collaborative interaction between government and industry to ensure that listeners are empowered with greater knowledge about how to better market to their targeted federal audience.
